Student Testimonials

Mrs Collett was an incredible teacher who helped, supported and encouraged me through my studies of English at A Level. By the end of my studies, I was familiar with every past question, and all possible future ones due to Mrs Collett's use of exemplar responses and feedback. I went into the exams prepared for any possibility, because I knew the exam spec like the back of my hand. Each lesson with Mrs Collett left me feeling like I could achieve what I wanted to. Mrs Collett was always supportive of each answer we would give in class and as homework, instructing us on how we could improve and highlighting the positives. I always felt valued by her, and I will never forget some of the positives things she said to me. She created a welcoming environment to learn in, a space where any answer was listened to and encouraged and expanded on, exploring all possible ideas. Mrs Collett's enthusiasm for English is unmatched, which is clear from the extra efforts and extent she goes to to make her students succeed, as she found and created extra revision sources and content to support us even further. Mrs Collett strived to remember each individual's journey through the course, knowing exactly when we had reached a new highest score, and being even more pleased than we were! Mrs Collett always welcomed us to ask any questions if we were unclear on material or anything else, and set up sessions for revision towards exam times. She would go out of her way to squeeze a meeting or study session in for any of us if we needed it. This type of dedication to students and the subject itself is remarkable on its own, let alone alongside everything else Mrs Collett did for us and our studies. My progress through the course was clear to see, with a clear linear progression in marks. I still remember when I achieved a high score, Mrs Collett spoke to me as I was leaving to tell me how impressed she was with my progress. I went away from that lesson feeling so enthusiastic and confident in my abilities. I succeeded in my exams and I am now happily studying film and television at the University Of Lincoln, after achieving the grades I needed. The things Mrs Collett taught me still help me today in my further educational studies, with writing essays and analysis. Mrs Collett is one of those once in a lifetime teachers who you never forget

1. Did I help you understand what was required of you by the course?

You did help me understand what was required of me by the course; the feedback on our essays was particularly helpful because of the level of detail about both what was good and what could have been done better. I always felt I understood why the essay I had written had been given the mark it had and what I could have done to bring that mark up. This allowed me to make progress and feel positive and engaged with the course; rather than feeling down when a piece of work didn't go as well as I had hoped, I read the feedback and understood what I needed to do next time to improve. 2. Did I make you feel valued? Was I supportive and encouraging? Did I listen to your ideas and encourage you to take these ideas/thoughts further?

Yes, our lessons felt like a genuine discussion amongst equals about the texts where everyone's contributions were valued and we developed our understanding collaboratively. This helped me to feel more confident in my ideas and fed my enthusiasm for the subject and the texts.

3. Did you get the sense that I enjoyed the subject? Did you get the sense that your success was important to me?

Absolutely.

4. Did you feel able to ask me for extra help and support?

Yes, always. I knew that you would always be understanding if I was struggling with the workload and be helpful if I needed something explaining further.

5. Did you feel that you made progress through my teaching and support?

I progressed a great deal through your teaching and support. I developed my close reading and analytical skills, my essay and exam technique, and love of the subject. You gave me the skills and the confidence to communicate my ideas effectively

Caroline could not have done a better job at helping me understand what was required of my GCSE English course. She made very clear, structured lesson plans and activity sheets that explaining the historical contexts of Shakespeare's 'Much ado about nothing' and Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice', which helped us draw parallels between the texts. I can still remember discussing the reasons for marriage for their contemporaries compared to ours with my year 11 class nine years later! This helped to open my mind to the perspective of characters who lived in different times and contexts from me, giving me a more nuanced understanding of life. Caroline also gave very clear examples of how to answer essay questions using the 'point, example, explanation' method whereby we were encouraged to comment on a theme within the text, back this up with an example and then discuss what we meant. This basic method to keep the reader on track is something I still keep in mind when writing now, and I have received excellent results for my essays at masters level. She also helped me to get to grips with the poetry anthology chosen for that year, which helped cultivate my love of poetry. Caroline was very organised and let us know well in advance about the curriculum and upcoming assessments, giving us ample room to make notes and discuss ideas in class to prepare. Besides her organisation and the rich content of her lessons, she also made me feel valued because of her belief in my capability. I remember her saying I was excellent at English literature and that I should do it for A level. This motivated me to do work hard at English even though it wasn't a subject I struggled with. I think this is why I got an A* at GCSE. Her passion for the subject shone through in her thorough preparation for class material and how we were able to discuss texts we liked and disliked and why. For example, I know we disagreed on Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men because she really liked the book whereas I did not! This kind of debate was good starting point for future literature classes when I studied French and Spanish texts at university. Finally, in her attitude towards us, Caroline was an approachable, supportive, and fair teacher.I would highly recommend her as an excellent, reliable and organised tutor!

Throughout my English A-Level course, Mrs Collett was the most phenomenal teacher. She provided me with several tools to develop and improve my ability and skills within the subject, enabling access to higher grades. She did this through creating additional materials, such as ‘Character Logs’ and structural breakdowns of the grade boundaries. This assisted in one of my proudest achievements within her class, scoring a 24/25 in my final course-work assessment. Mrs Collett never fails to go above and beyond for her students. When starting her class, I was a girl with very low confidence and self-esteem… but Mrs Collett helped my confidence not only within the subject but in myself flourish, helping me become the person I am today. Mrs Collett made the impossible… possible. As I once wrote in a ‘Thank You’ card to her “not all heroes wear capes”. Mrs Collett is certainly my hero and an inspiration to all! There are simply not enough words to express how thankful I am. From my very first lesson with Mrs Collett, her passion for the subject was evident. Learning from someone so passionate, not only inspired myself and other students, but encouraged the development of my own love for English. Mrs Collett never fails to put others before herself, especially her students. She was more than willing to do additional one-to-one sessions after class, adjusting to each students preferred style of teaching. In addition to this, during the exam-period, Mrs Collett created an additional enrichment to go over areas of difficulty and complete practice questions. Her expertise, effort and time never went unforgotten or unappreciated. Without doubt… Mrs Collett made me become the best version of myself.

Mrs Collett was very helpful when providing resources and gives a clear explanation of what is expected throughout the course, in descriptive, specific feedback and appropriate examples to ensure we know how to improve our work. She was amazingly supportive throughout all our lessons, highlighting our achievements while still encouraging us to improve the weaker aspects of our work. She approached every lesson with a clear plan in mind, with her enthusiasm for the subject and knowledge of external texts enabling us to achieve grades we can be proud of. Alongside that, she provided amazing support for me throughout my education where I felt comfortable and confident in coming to her with any queries about my work. I feel as if I've made a great deal of progress throughout my course and Mrs Collett's tuition, her passion and enthusiasm for the subject being the highlight of our lessons, while also pushing myself and my classmates to be the best we can be.

Mrs Collett's support through my English course was not only hugely valuable, but frequently the highlight of my week. Her passion for our texts was clear, and class was not only a safe place to explore new ideas and analyses, but also a place for rigorous debate, always facilitated and encouraged by Mrs Collett's consistent kindness and genuine care for not just our exam results, but our learning outside the subject and our future paths. I always felt that Mrs Collett believed in me 100%, and her support gave me the confidence to perform in my exams, as well as to take many opportunities outside the English course which I may not have had the confidence without her encouragement. She frequently provided exemplar answers, which were a hugely valuable resource, as well as encouraging us to view these critically and use them to develop our own understanding of essay techniques. Furthermore, wider reading was encouraged and often provided, which I feel hugely helped deepen my understanding of the course, helping to reach the higher-grade boundaries. Mrs Collett's passion and enthusiasm for English developed my own love for the subject. I left my English course not only with a grade I was incredibly proud of, but also with skills I have used in many areas of life (not least at university!), and a genuine love for literature which will endure forever.
